Evaluation Questions And Answers

In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In most punk rock music videos we are used to seeing busy chaotic scenes with shots of band members singing and playing instruments. Part of the reason I picked to do Green Days Missing You is everyone’s used to Green Days heavy punk rock sound and image. Missing You has a softer rock tone to it, it focuses on love compared to hate, destruction and the struggle of fitting as most punk videos depict. Missing You takes Green Day slightly away from their image allowing for scope to change their image further and open up to a wider audience.

As the song has slightly moved away from a punk rock sound I wanted my music video to do the same. My video depicts the main character walking around feeling lost, it shows her holding pictures of a loved one, the loved one isn’t around. The main character is searching for her missing friend.

I wanted my video to put across the message of love and loss, I used low and high camera shots to do this. These two camera angles can be used to make a person seem very big or very small, if the character is made to look small this could show that they are lost, unimportant or lonely.

My video definitely moves away from the stereotypical portrayal of punk rock.

I feel by doing this that I will be able to connect to a wider audience, people may watch the video possibly not realising that it is under the punk rock genre, this opens up the opportunity for people to possibly listen to more of this genre.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The main purpose of posters and digi-paks is to help sell and promote bands and artists. The poster and digi-pak are mostly used, as they are easily accessible and easy for the audience to see and remember. If you were handing out black posters or digi-paks no one would be interested as there isn’t any visuals for them to connect to. Most Digi-paks and posters include shots or references to the music video in which the are promoting, it would be pointless to have the music video one genre and the cover art another as it would lead people in to think its one thing and it actually turn out to be another.

My digi-pak and poster both provide images of the characters with in the music video, I decided to do this to give the audience an idea of what to expect from the video/song before viewing or listening to it.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I have learnt that the narrative connects will with the chosen song, it is easy to see that the main character is lost and longing for her friend. People find it easy to connect and relate to the situation that the main character is in.

People I asked all agreed that the smoke cloud was a bit distracting and that I could take more care when editing to make sure the whole video runs smoothly and doesn't jump when cut to next scene.

All in all I and very positive reactions to my music video, everyone that watched said the felt they related well to to character and that they'd happily watch my music video again.

Lyrics and Storyboard

Missing You - Green Day

Lyrics: From Billie Joes point of view (lead singing of Green Day) I'd say the song is about him possibly missing his wife, he is away the lot of the time touring and recording albums so it would make sense for this to be the meaning, though I personally feel that the song could be about a recent break up. "You're not around and I'm a complete disaster" this to me seems like someone who has recently ended a relationship and is still stuck in the first stages of the break up, but going back to what I said about Billie and his wife these lyrics still make perfect sense in that situation.

The song then goes on reminiscing about past events that happened in this persons life "it was the first time I told you I loved you at the bus station" this would make sense for the song to be about a break up, the person still clearly loves the other and is remembering the important things that happened within the relationship. These lyric I feel are very flexible in how people interpret it and relate to it, I feel that my music video fits well with the lyric, my music video shows a friend searching for another. The view may interpret this as the two friends had a falling out, one may have moved away or that the two are in a relationship but society is possibly keeping them away from each other.

Wouldn't let me rotate, kept returning to original form

Making Contact

This is a screenshot of the message I sent informing and asking if I could use the song of my choosing. He never got back to me, if I got the chance to do this again I would definitely asks permission months in advance.

Poster and Digipak

I'm not 100% happy with how my Digipak and Poster turned out, if I had the opportunity to do them again I would invest more time in learning how to use Photoshop and spend more time on my ideas. I would also take a wider range of photos so I could play around and have more scope for change. although I even though I'm not 100% happy I do feel that it does fit with the genre of music well, it looks armature, that "I don't care look " its also messy and "unkempt"

I feel like even though I'm not 100% happy with my products they do fit well with the genre. my album cover shares some similarities '21st Century Breakdown' Like this album cover I have the main characters centred with the band name and song title at the bottom middle. I have edited the mains black and white and left the background in colour like '21st Century Breakdown'.  My album cover was clearly heavily influenced by Green Days which then means it fits well with the Punk Rock genre.

Green Day poster

The album artwork is centred  on the poster, it is the first thing
someone well see, just above is the artist name ‘Green Day’. Having
the artist name at the very top of the page could have been done to
show the importance compared to other information that might be on the
poster.

The artist name and album title all carry the same colour scheme as
the album artwork, which means it blends into the advert. The advert
also gives details about how the album is being released to the public
in large font in white which forces it to stand out from the darker
back ground.

The album uses large amounts of persuasive langue to sell the album.
For example “The wait is finally over…” this might have been used to
draw the audience in. The poster also includes the singles that the
band released from the album, this means people are more likely to want to buy the album as they might be fans of the single. The poster
also gives information about social media and other online features
such as purchases and News. One similarity between albums of the rock
genre is the use of white lettering font. This makes it standout to
the potentially market.

The punk rock genre when being marketed tend to show the same set of styles. They use the messy, street art "I don't care' look. If a new artist were to use the same styles it would automatically appeal to punk rocks current audience as its a familiar look that they are comfortable with.

The poster has a very 'Banksy' look to them which also suggests further that the album is about the fall of modern day society as a lot of Banksy's art depicts that message.
Red and Orange graffiti spray colour theme further suggests that this is a punk rock album as they are stereotypical colours of punk rock music.

My Digipak and poster will follow the same style of the stereotypical punk rock look.
It will Include black and reds and contain elements of graffiti.

Kings of Leon Poster

The title of the album which is on the front of the poster is
advertising Kings Of Leon’s album ‘only by the night’ is a light lime
green, the poster carries a theme with green using a almost camouflage
effect. The use of the greens could also be used to create an illusion
of night vision goggles, this would link in to the albums title.
The album shows a mixture of the bands faces alongside an owls face.
The owl is often associated with the night and this is perhaps why the
owl has been included in the advert as the album name is ‘only by the
night’.
The bottom of the advert states some of the songs that listeners can
expect to hear on the new album. The songs that are listed have been
chosen as these songs are the most popular singles of the band and
this will attract people who are not so familiar with some of their
not so popular songs to possibly buy the album as they may like their
hit singles. The poster has a very dark and mysterious feel to it
which could have been used to create the stereotypical image the band
may have.
