Rock - Music Video Questionnaire Results

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/B3V59ZY

I asked both males and females to take part in my questionnaire. Overall it was a 50/50 split, both
Males and Females enjoy listening to Rock music. Before Rock music would have been stereotypically listened to by a mainly male audience. but in more recent years rock music is listened to by a strong female audience too.

Out of the age groups I asked to take part in my questionnaire 16 year olds and people aged 40+ listened to Rock music the most, younger people tend to listen to more modern 'fashionable'  forms of rock 'Emo, Heavy metal, Screamo' where as older generations will tend to listen to classic rock and heavy metal.

Out of the group of people I asked for my questionarie just over half prefer listening to Classic rock and Brit-pop, Comparing the sub-genre and the age it is surpirising to see these results as the majority of people I asked were 16-18, stereotypically you'd expect to see an older generation of people listening to Classic and Brit-pop. This shows us that peoples tastes in music are becoming wider and people are becoming more accepting of different music genres.

Out of the people I asked the majority preferred a music video with a good story line and narrative, this isn't the 'norm' for rock music videos as the majority are performance based but there are a few band that have made narrative rock misc videos more known, My Chemical Romance The Black Parade is a very theratrical almost movie like music video, the same goes for Green Day Jesus Of Suburbia.

Over half of the people I asked said they preferred realism in a rock music video, this suggests that people enjoy being able to link with and relate to the story or situation.

*Lyrics

The majority of the people I asked said they prefer the music video to match the lyrics this could be because people like to pick up the true emotion of the song and allows them to connect to the song better.

Kanye West Graduation Digipak

The writing on the front cover is very bright and eye catching, all of the colours on the front are similar but use different tones and tints, this makes the cover very eye catching and instantly noticeable, as a result more people are likely to pick up and buy this album.
The text which is very noticable is 'KanYeWest GRADUATION', it is located at the top of the cover slightly to the right. another noticeable feature about the album title is the 'Y' in 'Kanye' is a capital  instead of a lowercase. "Graduation" is also in all capitals, this is done to emphasise the title, there is also synergy between the title and the album artwork, the cover contains people celebrating their graduation.

Kanye's music is Hip Hop, the album cover clearly shows this as Hip Hop tends to be very colourful, lively and flamboyant. the mixture of vibrant colours shows this.

At the bottom left of the cover there s a forewarning "PARENTAL ADVISORY: EXPLICT CONTENT" this is used to warn the buyer that there is mature content in the album and may not be suitable for a young audience.

Right Place Right Time Olly Murs Digipack

The front cover of the digipack depicts a photo of Olly Murs, his name and the name of the album. It has done in a clear simple but fun font that is easy the read. The artist himself is centre of the cover with his name a the top left corner, this draws attention directly to Olly.

The Background is light blue with the title in white written in different style fonts, 'Right Place, Right Time' is also the name of one of the albums songs which was also released as a single, this is a good way of marketing that single.
The artist is dressed in very simple but fashionable clothing, this and the use of light colours in the background gives us an idea of the genre of music (pop). This is a very typical style choice for a pop artist.

The back cover of the album has a listing of all of Olly's songs which are on the album and which disc they're on, All the companies that were involved in producing and distributing Olly's album and the date the album was released. The back of the album also follows the same styling and colours as the front, in the background are all of Olly's songs in a white font. The style of the font is very stereotypical for a pop artist/group.

Green Day 21st Century Breakdown Digipak Analysis

On the front cover we can see two people kissing, fans of Green Day will instantly recognise these people as they are characters from the music videos of this album. Christian and Gloria. This will automatically draw existing fans in to buying the album.

At the top of the cover you have the bands name drawn in graffiti, this can give new people to the band an indication to the genre of music. graffiti and destruction is often associated with punk and rock genre, its a very anti government and  follows anarchy and rebels against the systems.
The title of the album "21st Century Breakdown" suggests that the songs on the album are all about problems and the breakdown of society in the modern age.

The images on the cover have a very 'Banksy' look to them which also suggests further that the album is about the fall of modern day society as a lot of Banksy's art depicts that message.
Red and Orange graffiti spray colour theme further suggests that this is a punk rock album as they are stereotypical colours of punk rock music.

The cross in the R that is in the bands name might suggest the non conformity message the band has, they are not conforming to the government or certain trends.
The light around the couple kissing looks like a torch’s light, this could be implying that the two characters in the videos for the album criminals, outlaws, rioters etc.

The back cover of the digipak contains the whole play list of the album, the song titles carry a similar theme as the title of the album.
We can see the full image of  Christian and Gloria which now gives us a clearer idea of the album and them as characters, they are kissing on top of a burnt out car with flames from a 'city burning'. This phrase is used in a few of the albums songs, the album art work uses good imagery to link in with the songs, this will give the audience a clearer Idea of what the album is about., this could also be used to get the message across of finding peace amongst the bad. This also now tells us that they are more than likely in a riot.

Sven E Carlsson

Sven E Carlsson believes there are two categories that a music video can fall into, Performance and Conceptual.

Performance videos are when you are able to see the artist sing and dance throughout the music video.

Carlsson believes the performer is often made into a materialisation 'commercial exhibition' this where the artist is made into almost selling something; someone that fans of the artist will aspire to
be. These scenes are often extremely high in quality.

Conceptual Videos are videos where you watch something other than the artist, Story telling.

Another type is the televised brad, the artist will be telling a story and will use on screen imagery instead of personal images.

The final type is elctronic shaman, sometimes the artist is 'invisible' and only their voice that anchor the visuals.

I should be so lucky/ Better The Devil You Know

In Kylie Minogue’s ‘I should be so lucky’ music video her style is typically 80s girl next door, you can tell she takes pride in her appearance but does not act older than she is. Her style at this point is very much in keeping from her character Charlene Robinson from ‘Neighbours’ who is most definitely the girl next door but is not afraid to break from the minority as she works in mechanics. This makes her a strong female role model for a young target audience showing them that it’s okay to be different. Even though both images show the girl next door Kylie in 'I Should Be So Lucky' is a lot more 'looked after', she takes a lot more pride in her appearance and is slightly more glamorous.

In this music video the camera is focused on Kylie throughout the whole video. Most shots used are mid shots to close ups of Kylie, this show the audience it’s all about her and that she wants to be taken as a serious artist and show her new identity in the music industry. Throughout this music video the shots used also show off her apartment, which indicates to the audience how successful she is as we can see things like a baby grand piano a four post bed.

In this video Kylie is represented as a young, responsible woman. She is seen is a tidy apartment, the furniture and décor shows the audience how successful she is. Kylie's style in the video is homely and down to earth, her hair and make-up  in some shots is styled in the same way as Charlene Robinson when she had her infamous wedding on ‘Neighbours’ which would appeal to fans of the soap.

Better The Devil You Know

Kylie is represented in a totally different way from "I should be so lucky". Kylie is shown off as a completely different person, in "I should be so lucky" she came across as this sweet girl next door, I "Better the devil you know she has a more fun grown up party girl look to her.

She is a lot more exposed, she is wearing a white crop top and gold hot pants, complete opposite to what she was wearing in "I should be so lucky" Kylie is giving off the impression that she is trying to escape and change her star image, she has physically grown up and wants to grow as an artist too. I this music video Kylie is dancing a lot more compared to her older videos. She is acting a lot more seductive and sexy in her new videos, this could be because she want to attract an older audience as well as the young possible teenage audience from before. Though she has a sexy look in this music video (attracting older) it's still very fun and has a very active party vibe (attracting the young.)

In some parts of the music video kylies star image is very similar to madonnas in "like a prayer." Kylie is Sen wearing the same black dress Madonna is wearing in her music video. The only difference is Kylies video is not considered offensive like Madonnas.
